China Eastern Airlines will introduce a new direct air link between Geneva and Shanghai starting 16 June 2025, marking a major step forward in connectivity between Switzerland and China. The service is scheduled to operate four times a week, subject to regulatory approval.
Switzerland’s international connectivity continues to strengthen with the announcement of a new route between Geneva Airport and Shanghai, China’s leading economic hub. Operated by China Eastern Airlines, one of the country’s top three carriers and a member of SkyTeam, the service will enhance both business and tourism exchanges between the two regions.
Flights are planned on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, departing Geneva at 12:00 PM with a flight time of approximately 11 hours and 30 minutes. Return flights from Shanghai will leave at 1:30 AM on the same days, arriving in Geneva at 7:50 AM. With a fleet of nearly 700 aircraft, China Eastern is well positioned to deliver reliable long-haul service on this route.
This new air link comes at a time of growing demand. Tourism from China to Switzerland and neighboring France surged in 2024, and forecasts suggest this upward trend will continue. Beyond tourism, the new route is expected to stimulate economic exchanges and offer freight opportunities between the Shanghai region and Western Switzerland, particularly in sectors such as watchmaking, pharmaceuticals, and advanced manufacturing.
The Geneva–Shanghai connection will complement the existing Geneva–Beijing service operated by Air China, making Geneva the only airport in Switzerland with direct flights to China’s two largest cities. This further positions the canton as a strategic hub for international business and travel, reinforcing its global reach and attractiveness.
The official launch remains contingent on the approval of relevant aviation authorities. However, once confirmed, this development will represent a significant milestone in strengthening Sino-Swiss relations across multiple sectors.
